The Met Gala, PUNK: Chaos to Couture

Gerard Butler in Dolce
Okay so for those of you that don't know; "the Met Ball or Met Gala, is an annual ball that celebrates the annual opening of the Metropolitan Museum's fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute. The red carpet evening is hosted by Vogue magazine. It is regarded as an important social event in New York City. The event has been an annual affair at the Met since 1971 and became popular when Diana Vreeland became consultant to the Costume Institute in 1971 and with her 1973-1974 exhibit "The World of Balenciaga". (Thanks Wikipedia!)

And yes, I know the Met Gala was over a week ago but this blog didn't exist when the Met Gala happened so shush, better late than never. Each Met Gala is themed and this years was 'PUNK: Chaos to Couture'. While some celebs choose to fully embrace the theme (which come on, is surely more fun), a lot tend to wear what they know to be classically good looking, such as Gerard Butler. However, Gerard Butler is in fact Scottish and honestly with an accent like that, you basically do whatever you want, themes are irrelevant.

Okay, next are my well dressed man, not at all following the punk theme either, but who are very in fashion right now. Firstly, Eddie Redmayne, star of Les Miserables, in Dior Homme. Popping blues are a great colour pick right now and he surely pulls it off. My only question would be Dior's inspiration for his tux...

Coincidence?
I think not

Others who haven't followed the theme for the night but also seem to be following latest fashions are designer Tom Ford, arriving in a suave, double-breasted black tuxedo and Jason Sudeikis arriving in sneakers with his Calvin Klein suit. Tommy Hilfiger was wearing a red big checked suit jacket (quite punk) and what appeared to possibly be embroidered slippers which were in circulation in early fashion shows this year, though I can't say for certain. Clearly some people have been looking at my blog. Come on Tom and Tommy, how many times do I have to tell you two to stop stealing my style. On the off chance you ever read this sirs, let me point out that was a joke, clearly you wore it first and we should hang out some time, get an interview, maybe do some collaborations, ya know, whatever.

Finally, we have come to my 3 favourite outfits of the night.
Alasdhair Willis, Gavin Rossdale and Marc Jacobs.

Alasdhair Willis
Alasdhair Willis.
Fully embracing the punk theme Willis also incorporated a growing trend of animal prints. He did this in the form of a white leopard style jacket and punk-style shoes. He wisely kept it simple with white shirt and black tie and pants so as to not overcomplicate the look. I love everything about this outfit, right down to the styling of his hair and beard. But, possibly the thing I like most, is how much he embraced the theme!

Gavin Rossdale
Gavin Rossdale.
Also very much taking the theme into account was Gavin Rossdale. He wore a very punk plaid suit by Vivienne Westwood, the original punk designer. Topped off with a skinny tie and white creepers he pulled off a very good punk look. Following the trend of big squares in any form of tartan, checks or plaid shown in many Winter fashion shows early this year, Rossdale looked great. And having Gwen Stefani on you're side certainly makes it easier!

Marc Jacobs.

Despite Willis and Rossdales great looks and the fact Marc doesn't look very punk at all, just the shear awesomeness of his outfit puts him as my favourite from the Met Gala. Jacobs has not brought out any polka dots in recent seasons and so "could polka dots be coming back through in his next collection?" is a question that has been in my mind since seeing the amazing suit. He elegantly puts the statement suit with a black neckerchief, seen in many Winter shows this year and casual sneakers, also a big trend. And to finish it all off, a great bag. It's just plain fantastic, 100% class. Neutral colours of black and white yet not boring and still
retains a lot of energy. I have no words but well done.

Thank you for reading!
